King Cry-Baby

Forget the cold winter weather approaching - today, it felt like spring was here. So, I wore my favorite (and only) leather jacket; sorry, it's actually false leather since I don't believe in wearing animals for fashion. Although I don't like wearing real leather, I do love the look of these jackets (plus, real leather is much too expensive for my liking). I love the 'bad-assery' it has, and how you can make it look even more bad-ass with having all kinds of junk all over it like pins/buttons. Well, I pushed it to the maximum of bad-assery. In September, I was getting ready to head down to Fairmount, Indiana for the annual James Dean Festival and I just so happened to be watching the film Cry Baby, and with not seeing it in such a long time, I fell in love with this film all over again. It's the true rockabilly musical. Johnny Depp is so damn hot in this film, it's insane. I gave my sister a great idea - to put the same 'Cry Baby' logo on the back of our jackets for the festival. Just as this:

My sister is always painting various things on jackets; whether it be a leather one, or a denim one. So she made a stencil, and voila, we had the same Cry Baby logo on our jackets to show how much we love this film! 

This is the finished product (in Fairmount, the first night there, at a concert of a great band that plays all songs from the 1950's called The Moon Cats!). I had so much fun that night. Danced my heart out; ugh, take me back! 

Before I showed you my outfit from today, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite photos taken of me wearing this jacket while at the festival.

A young photography student was doing a piece on 'Fashion in the streets' or something fun like that, and loved my sister and I's look so much that she asked if she could photograph us and use us in her assignment. 

Wearing my favorite shirt, of my good friend Lenny, who is a fashion designer and he makes the coolest bowling shirts (I have one of my own that I love, and will probably post about it in the future).

Here is my outfit from today: 

I'm wearing my Cry Baby jacket, with a black v-neck top from Ricki's, a plaid skirt from the 1950's that I got at a local thrift store, tennis shoes, and topped with Bakelite bracelets and a watch from the 1950's.

I have way too much fun showing off my jacket. It's bad-ass, and if you don't agree with me, than you're wrong. But, honestly, if you want to have a jacket like this than look out for an inexpensive jacket at your local thrift store, and then you can do it too! With a handmade stencil, and white paint...it's easy, and affordable! Yay, for affordable!!!

How To Tie A Headscarf

So, I am sure there are some of you lovely ladies who are new to the 'pin up' look, or vintage look, and were curious as to how some can achieve the perfect vintage style headscarf. Tying headscarf's are insanely easy. Since I'am a perfectionist when it comes to certain things, it can be frustrating for me if it doesn't look good enough; but all in all, it takes no more than a minute and a half.

Headscarf's are perfect for bad hair days when you just don't want to bother doing anything to your head but still want to have that vintage look. They're also used (and probably used more often) to wrap up pin curls or foam rollers in. I wore headscarf''s a lot in the summer, it was like my outfit must have; so I got pretty good at all sorts of scarf tying. 

One thing I have not done before is a head turban, used from a vintage template. It was surprisingly super easy, but I would like to have another (longer and better) scarf to use for next time I decide to do this style again.

What I have come up with is a step by step, using pictures on how I tied my turban in my last outfit post. I also added a second tutorial picture, step by step on how I would regularly tie my headscarf. 

To begin, with my 'vintage style turban', you need to have a long scarf that is quite thick in width. Any old scarf will do, as I used just a scarf I'd use around my neck. 

Here's what it will look like: 

Step One: Find a long scarf.

Step Two: Position scarf.

Step Three: Place it to your liking.

Step Four: Take two ends and wrap around the back, having them crossover each other.

Step Five: Bring the two ends in the back and place them in the front. Crossover again.

Step Six: Twist ends together.

Step Seven: Tuck ends into the sides.

Step Eight: Finished! You can always add an accessory like a big brooch.

Here's my second way to tie a headscarf. How I usually do it.

Step One: Get a scarf, but a scarf that is square. Then fold it into a triangle. Its okay if you keep half the scarf like this, and not completely even. This makes the scarf larger and covers your entire head. You don't need to do this if you have a large scarf.

Step Two: Flip it around, and put it on the back of your head, ending just above the neck. Make sure the pointed end it in your face, like this.

Step Three: Take the two ends, lift them up.

Step Four: Tie knot over pointed end to secure in place.

Step Five: Take triangle and lift it over the knot from before.

Step Six: Tie another knot over that, to secure.

Step Seven: Take ends, and tuck them into the sections on the side. Now, at this point you could also take ends and make it into a bow, but this particular scarf was not long enough to do that.

Step Eight: Finished! You can also add an accessory, but I'd suggest only doing that if your scarf is a simple color and has no design on it already.

Outfit Of The Week

Hey guys and dolls! I am clearly a terrible blogger, since I haven't been posting as much as I would like too, but I honestly hate my laptop, and I barely use it, where as a lot of people use theirs on a daily basis...I do not. But anyhow, this week I will be showing you guys my outfit of, well the week, because my outfits this week haven't been quite up to par.

Today, I felt like a Christmas tree, without all the lights and decorations...just a bare, tree. I wore a dark green dress, that is bought new, but has a 1950s/1960s feel to it. I paired the green with brown shoes, a vintage brown purse, and vintage gold accessories. And because I was having a bad hair day, I got a long scarf, and put my hair in a 'vintage turban'. I love the look of vintage turbans, and because I do not have a true turban from the 1950s, I make-do with what I have.

No matter what outfit I wear (whether it be an article of clothing that is new, rather than vintage), I ALWAYS have a vintage accessory. No need to explain why.

My next post will be on how I tied my turban, and an extra way of how I tie my head scarfs!

Dress: Joe Fresh I actually have quite a few pieces of clothing from here, because the vintage style is definitely there. They have many unique dresses, and I actually quite adore them. Plus, they're cheap. You can get a vintage style and not break the bank. 

Shoes: George Yes, this is Wal-Mart, but I LOVE the shoes there. They're the cutest, and are quite stylish. These shoes, I got for $5. 

Purse: Thrift store! No matter the thrift store, SEARCH! It's all about looking. Looking, high and low for that perfect vintage piece. 

I really need a personal photographer. All of my photos are taken on my iPhone. So I apologize for the crappy quality and crooked-ness. I'll try to get my sister to use my Canon camera so they look more professional, but every time I ask her to get a picture of my outfit, its like pulling teeth. I know I keep saying this, but seriously, I need to get better at this thing!

Nan's Closet Raid

This past weekend I was at my Bestamor's place (Bestamor is Norwegian for Grandma), and she was talking about how filled her closet's are of clothing that she doesn't even wear anymore - I was right there, front and center to see all the goodies. I was in my glory. I love looking through my grandmother's closet's because firstly, you never know what you're gonna find, and secondly, IT'S FREE. Nothing beats getting vintage clothing for free. Since I like to get my vintage finds for a bargain. I'm all about saving money and making sure I spend what ever money I get wisely. Every so often I will treat myself with something a little more expensive but all in all, I like the hunt for cheap vintage goodies.

I mostly go to thrift stores, where they have just about anything for super cheap prices. I don't know of any other place that you can find vintage clothing...for a good price that is. Yes, there are 'vintage' clothing stores around, but every time I find myself in one, I go berserk with the ludicrous prices on things that aren't in that good of condition and should be a lower price. That is why I search for my vintage clothing at my local thrift stores, where they have good deals and even better prices. The hunt for the clothing is what I thrive for...it's butt loads of fun! People are always asking me where I get my clothing from, and I always say, thrift stores; they're all one of a kind purchases!

A lot of the time when you find clothing from the 30s, 40s, or 50s you never truly know if it will fit properly because women were differently shaped back in those days, but I find that when I get my clothing from family members that are from those times, they fit just right! Almost all of my great grandmother's dresses from the 30s that were passed down to me, fit like an absolute glove. But, back to my Bestamor, the majority of clothing she gave me from the 50s or 60s again, fit me perfectly.

I'm not posting all of the items of clothing she gave me, just my favorites that she did.

My first ensemble: I received this skirt from her, which was one of the many she gave me, but it's my favorite and most unique! It reminds me of the 1940s, but I believe it may be from the late 1960s.
The top I got a thrift store and is hand knitted from the 1950s. I like to pair this top with many outfits because it fits so well with many skirts.
The white belt I also got a thrift store and is from the late 1950s. My shoes are from Wal-Mart(not even sorry), and I got them for $5!!

My second ensemble: Is a light pink two piece pleated skirt and shirt that are a full outfit pairing. This has got to be my favorite outfit. The skirt fits perfectly, the shirt is a little big because my Bestamor is a big breasted woman, as I am not but it suits me fine. It is from the 1950s, and is just absolutely darling. My shoes are also from Wal-Mart and I also got them for $5! 

Sorry about the bad quality and wobbly-ness of the pictures, but once I get better at this blogging thing, I'll take better photos, I promise!

My third ensemble: Is a stripped shirt from the 1950's that she gave to me. It's super comfy! The black pants are also from a thrift store - they're semi high waisted but I wear them with just about everything. 

My fourth ensemble: Is another shirt paired with the same black pants. This black and pink striped shirt is from the late 1950's to early 1960's and comes with a black string to tie around your waist.

My fifth ensemble: Is another pairing with the black pants (sorry for the repeated pants, but I was in a rush). This red and white sweater is so lovely! It has a pocket in the front and is another comfy one - just in time for the Christmas season! I'm not sure what era this one comes from but it looks vintage all the same. 

My sixth and final ensemble: Now this is another super cute outfit. It's a one piece and is from the 1950's. It also has pockets!!! I get excited about pockets. I love this one as well! 

Those are my six favorite clothing pieces that I got from my Bestamor! She said that she may have more vintage pieces for me, but needs to search through some closet that are piled with clothes! I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I do. A lot of these ensembles are so unique, and I can't wait to share more of my future vintage outfits with you all! Again, I apologize for my picture taking, as I was rushing and had to take the photos on a self timer. Once I get better at this blogging thing, I will have a friend take pictures for me - preferably not in my room. If you like the thrill of searching for vintage pieces or are starting out and want to find the perfect vintage garment pieces, then ask your grandparents if you can raid their closets for clothing they may not wear anymore; you never know what you may come across!!!

Wet Set Pin Curl Hair Tutorial Part 2 - Youtube

I finally had the chance to put up my part 2 of the recent pin curl hair tutorial I did. I am somewhat satisfied with the way my hair turned out, but I have good hair days and bad ones. I love the way my hair looks in various vintage hair styles, but I find myself to be lacking in the day-to-day routine of setting my hair. I definitely need to start setting my hair every single day. I absolutely hate using a curling iron and I'd much rather set my hair while its wet (or even if its dry), in some sort of hair roller, to leave in overnight or for a couple hours.

The quality of this video, I find to be much better...I have no idea why but Youtube has its issues when it comes to my videos I upload.

Materials needed for this part of the tutorial:

• Wire round brush of the size of your liking (I usually have two different sizes, just encase) 
• Comb 
• Gel (of your choice) 
• Bobby pins
• Fancy hair piece of your choice (whether it be a flower, clip, etc.) 
• Hair spray of your choice (and lots of it!) 

Even though I was semi-impressed with the way my hair turned out, here are some photos I took after the tutorial.
